Can you use vacuum storage bags for duvets and pillows?

Many suitable synthetic-filled duvets and pillows can be compressed for storage, but the contents must be completely clean and dry and their care instructions must permit compression.

Start with the care label

The manufacturer’s care instructions take priority. Natural feather and down fillings may lose loft or suffer damage when heavily compressed for prolonged periods. If the label does not permit it—or you are uncertain—use breathable storage instead.

Moisture is the real danger

Vacuum bags do not create mould, but they can trap moisture already present in fabric. Wash and dry items thoroughly, allow them to cool and make certain there is no residual dampness before sealing.

How to pack suitable bedding

1. Choose a bag large enough that the zip is not strained.
2. Fold the duvet or pillows loosely and keep contents below the fill line.
3. Keep all fabric away from the zip and seal the entire length several times.
4. Remove the air without forcing sharp fastenings against the plastic.
5. Secure the valve cap and store away from heat and sharp edges.
